Five persons have been confirmed dead by the Nigerian Police in a kerosene tanker explosion that occurred in a popular village market in Kubwa Abuja, also known as Maitama Ultra Modern Market Kubwa. The incident occurred on the evening of Friday 5th November.

In a statement signed by police spokesperson Josephine Adeh, ten other persons also sustained injuries and revealed that two shops in the market were affected in the fire incident following the kerosene surface tank explosion. The remains of the five dead persons were already burnt beyond recognition while ten others who were seriously injured were immediately taken to the hospital and receiving medical attention.

The Commissioner of Police, Babaji Sunday, who described the incident as unfortunate, has ordered a discrete investigation into the incident. The CP said that The FCT Police Command has commenced investigations into the fire incident that occurred at the Village Market. operatives from the Forensic Section of the Command Criminal Investigations Department, have also been deployed to the scene for forensic analysis to unravel the cause of the incident and more importantly provide recommendations to prevent a reoccurrence of such an incident. The CP commiserated with the families of the victims, noting that the inferno was under control, and commended the people who were at the scene at the time for supporting in the rescue operation and general control of the fire.

An eye witness, Mrs. Njideka Oguchi the sad event occurred this evening at about 6:00 pm around the popular junction “woman Bukuu” where the tank of a kerosene seller exploded killing buyers and sellers as well as affected badly shops within the area. Mrs. Oguchi said the woman that sells the kerosene and her son were also affected but she did not know if they are among the burnt corpses being taken aware by the police. Other eyewitnesses speculated that adulterated kerosene was the cause of the explosion while calling on residents to be careful of the kerosene they buy in spite of the high cost of cooking gas.

Men and officers of the Nigeria Fire Service who were already on the ground to stop the fire ran out of water and went to refill their vehicle during the operation.

Meanwhile, The Chairman Bwari Area Council of the FCT Mr. John Gabaya has directed all the roadside sellers in the Kubwa-Maitama Market to vacate before Monday 8th October as the enforcement team would be on the ground to ensure compliance.
