Everton Star, Alex Iwobi will miss Nigeria’s final 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Lesotho after testing positive for Covid-19 scheduled to hold on Tuesday, 30th March 2021.
Alex Iwobi’s infection was reportedly picked up during mandatory testing of the Super Eagles’ squad prior to the match in Porto which ended 1-0 in Benin, and travelled back to Nigeria with the rest of the squad on Sunday.
According to Eagle spokesman, Babafemi Raji, Iwobi has left the camp, and that before he left the camp, he never showed any symptoms as he was reported seen healthy and active.
He scored twice during the qualifying campaign for the delayed Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Cameroon in January 2022.
Nigeria’s win over Benin guaranteed them top spot in Group L, although they had already qualified before kick-off, thanks to a goalless draw between Lesotho and Sierra Leone.
Gernot Rohr’s side has 11 points from five matches and are seven points ahead of third-placed Sierra Leone, with the top two teams in the group qualifying for the tournament. Nigeria is to host the bottom side Lesotho in Lagos.
Iwobi is Nigeria’s second leading scorer in the 2021 AFCON qualifiers, with three goals in four appearances.
