IKOYI BUILDING COLLAPSE: DEATH TOLL RISES TO 45- OMOTOSHO

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho has said two more bodies have been recovered from the site where a 21-Storey building collapsed on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, Lagos on the 1st November 2021, bringing the total number of bodies recovered to 45.

Authorities immediately swung into action to carry out rescue operations at the site after the 21- storey building, which was still under construction at the time, collapsed suddenly. Some people who were at the site at the time of the collapse were trapped under the rubble while a few others were lucky to escape. Among those lucky to escape is one of the labourers on-site, who is recuperating in hospital.

According to the survivor, whose identity and location are not revealed for safety reasons, they were working on a cracked pillar on the first floor when the sad incident happened. He said he and one of his other colleagues were given the directive by Engineers on-site to break and rebuild the pillar which had some defects when “suddenly we heard a noise, the thing (Pillar) started to shake, I and Monday (the other labourer) ran when we saw that the pillar was starting to shake”.

While the total number of people at the venue at the time of the incident remains unclear, rescue workers have continued to dig through the rubble with hopes of finding and possibly, saving casualties.
