Gunmen have reportedly killed Dr. John Chike Akunyili, widower of late Information Minister and NAFDAC DG, Prof. Dora Akunyili on Tuesday 27 September 2021 at Umuoji in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State. He was shot dead after attending an event at Onitsha, where the University of Nigeria Nsukka Alumni Association (UNAA) honored his wife.
He was killed along with his driver and police orderly.
The circumstances of his murder are still sketchy. He left an event at Onitsha, with his son, Obumneme, who works with the Anambra State government before he was shot dead.
Dr. Chike’s brother, Cyril in an Instagram post on Wednesday said, “IPOB killed my senior brother. Why?”
He went on to lament his brother’s killing, stating: “Akunyili is dead. IPOB why on a Tuesday?” before proceeding to delete the post.
Before his death, the wife of Late Dr. Chike Akunyili, Late Dora Akunyilu had faced constant death threats against herself, her family, and her staff. On 26 December 2003, while Akunyili was on the way to Anambra State in Eastern Nigeria, gunmen fired on her convoy. The bullets narrowly missed her, with one of the bullets going through her headscarf and the windscreen of the car.
She died at a Specialist Cancer Hospital in India on 7 June 2014 after a two-year battle with uterine cancer.
Late Dr. Chike Akunyili was the Chief Medical Director at the St. Leo Hospital in Enugu State.
