NUT PRESIDENT GIVES UPDATE ON STRIKE ACTION BY FCT TEACHERS OVER UNPAID SALARY ARREARS

Teachers in Government Primary and Secondary Schools in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja have insisted that nothing will prevent an indefinite strike if their demands are not met before Thursday, 25th November 2021.

Stephen Knabayi, Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, FCT

Stephen Knabayi, chairman of the Nigerian Teachers Union (NUT), FCT, made this known to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) at the end of an emergency meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, 23rd November 2021.

The FCT Chapter of the NUT started a five-day warning strike on Thursday, 18th November 2021 for non-payment of their delayed promotion salaries, Insecurity, lack of updating teachers, among others.

The Strike action, according to the Chairman of the union is carried out by all teachers in the FCT Administration as well as those from the Area Councils, adding that the demands of the teachers are twofold.

Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Comrade Stephen Knabayi, listening to the Acting Secretary of NUT, Comrade Margaret I. Jethro

Knabayi said that although the Union had received a commitment from the FCT Minister, Bello Mohammed in this regard, the Union has continued with the warning Strike as there had been no sign of commitment from the FCT area Council Chairmen.

He said: “The Strike continues. It is a Five-day warning strike to end on November 24th, 2021. We are dealing with two levels of government on this matter- the State and area councils”.

“As I speak to you now, we no longer have problems with FCTA, due to the commitment we have received from the Ministry of FCT. However, we have no commitment from the area as we speak. That’s why the strike is still ongoing.”

The NUT president urged the Chairmen of the area councils to take advantage of the window for the warning Strike to dialogue with the Union. Failure to do so, he said, would mean a call for the strike to continue.

He added that he hopes they continue to take advantage of the available window to dialogue with them with the aim of proffering solutions, or else, the Union would meet to discuss and decide on how to take the Strike to the next level.
