Nigerian music superstar, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has grabbed another nomination with the song ‘Brown Skin Girl’, in his 2019 collaboration with Beyoncé, in the 2021 MTV Music Video Awards (VMAs).
The record is nominated under the ‘Best R&B‘ and ‘Best Cinematography’ categories.
The song, which was written by American singer, Beyoncé, Guyanese rapper, Saint JHN, and Nigerian singer, Wizkid, featuring Blue Ivy Carter from the 2019 soundtrack album of the movie “Lion King: The Gift“, made it to Top 40/Rhythmic radio on July 23, 2019, as the second single from the album and was the most-streamed female song of 2019 on Apple Music in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Due to this collaboration, Wizkid has enjoyed success with several awards. He has won two Soul Train Music Awards, the BET Awards, an NAACP Image Award, and a Grammy Award for Best Video in 2021.
Wizkid is also best known for his vocal contribution to Drake’s “One Dance”,
Coming on the heels of the success of the album, this inspired the #BrownSkinGirlChallenge, on social media across the world, challenging women of color to embrace their brown skin by sharing images of themselves online. This led to thousands of social media users sharing their own pictures of empowerment from their skin color and heritage.
In a congratulatory message, MTV Awards wrote: “@Beyonce @SAINtJHN @wizkidayo CONGRATULATIONS “Brown Skin Girl” from Black is King is nominated for Best Musical Moment at the #MTVAwards!”
